How to Balance Business, Family, and Fun This Fall
Fall is here! Whether it’s the crisp air (depending on where you live) or the excitement of new routines, there’s something magical about the season. I actually love fall even more here in Florida, because it’s honestly a little bit different than everywhere else, because it’s so hot here in the summer. Personally, I’m like a hermit in the summer.
But in fall, it finally starts to cool down to about 78 degrees. This is when I feel like I can come out of my summer hibernation, slow down on business, and live my best life—Halloween, family time, and of course, fall at Disney!
However, this year, I’m approaching the season a little differently when it comes to my business. Normally, I’d slow things down, focusing more on enjoying the season, but I’ve got financial goals to hit. And rather than letting that overwhelm me, I’ve decided to embrace the challenge by kicking it up a notch. But don’t worry—I’m still finding ways to enjoy all the fall vibes.
What to Do When Life Gets Busy Beyond Your Control
If you’re like me and dealing with a family transitioning into school routines, you know how chaotic things can get. My oldest just started kindergarten, so we’re juggling a new schedule, weekend activities, and of course, that overwhelming sense of “How do I manage it all?”
As business owners, when life gets busy, we have two choices:
- Take proactive steps to manage our time and stay focused on what truly matters.
- Let the overwhelm take control, hoping everything works out on a prayer.
I’m going with option #2—and I suggest you do too.
The key to avoiding chaos is to zone in on priorities, create a clear plan, and say “no” to distractions. As much as we can’t control everything (hello, endless school activities and surprise spirit weeks), we can control how we manage our time and energy in our businesses.
Take Control of Your Time
Owning a business requires us to step up in a way that ensures life doesn’t just happen to us—we take control where we can. That means setting clear routines and priorities for ourselves and our work. For me, this fall means not slowing down but staying energized with exciting projects that keep me motivated. I’m leaning into creative marketing, hosting a fun new photoshoot, and planning a big virtual event this fall. All these things light me up and make the hustle worth it!
But before you dive headfirst into all the things you want to accomplish this fall, let’s talk about how to set yourself up for success.
Two Essential Steps to Zone in on Your Priorities this Fall
To keep the chaos at bay and prevent burnout, here are two key things I recommend:
- Block Off Personal Time First
Whether it’s lunch breaks, time with family, or self-care, schedule your personal time first. I’m a big advocate of taking a real break during your day—watch a show, read a book, or just step away from your desk. Don’t wait until you’re burned out. Plan your holidays, girls’ nights, or even downtime during your period. You’ll show up as the best version of yourself when you prioritize your well-being. - Focus on Business Priorities
It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing too many things because we feel like we “should.” But this is where you need to get laser-focused on what really matters for your business. If you’re planning to launch something new, like a podcast or a new product, something else might have to go on the back burner. For me, I’ve scaled back on blog posts and extra podcast episodes to focus on my virtual event. Streamlining your tasks allows you to say “yes” to your top priorities and “no” (or “not right now”) to everything else.
Be Strategic With Your Time and Energy
As part of my shift in focus this fall, I’ve made some changes in my content strategy to free up time for more impactful activities. Normally, I post five to six times a week, but now I’m dialing that back a bit and focusing more on selling through stories and offering mini-trainings. This small adjustment has already saved me 40 minutes a week, giving me more time to focus on what truly matters.
That’s how you find balance—it’s not about doing everything at once, but about being strategic with your time and energy.
Seasonal Transitions: The Perfect Time to Reset
Fall is a season of transition, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By proactively setting priorities and making space for what matters most, you can enjoy the best of both worlds—thriving in your business while still making time for all the fall fun.
With kids back in school, now is the perfect time for a reset in your business. Before diving into new projects or tasks, take a moment to map out your priorities. Block your personal time, set clear business goals, and decide what will move the needle most for you. Don’t overload your plate to the point of burnout, because when you’re stretched too thin, it impacts your work and family life.
